Taste the popular Sencha tea from Japan

Sencha Tea is the most widely consumed tea in Japan. This typical Japanese green tea is served at just about every occasion. Organic Sencha tea leaves are grown on nutrient-rich volcanic soils in southern Japan in Kagoshima Province.

The fresh spring water from the high altitude tea gardens and the careful cultivation of the tea leaves gives this Sencha tea its full Sencha flavor with that unique hint of umami. The dark green leaves are finely rolled and produce a greenish yellow tea with an intense aroma.

What is Sencha?

You may already be familiar with that other popular Japanese green tea? Matcha tea! Both teas, no stronger, all Japanese green tea is made from the same tea plant; The Camellia Sinensis. The difference between all those Japanese green teas is in the way they are grown, harvested, produced and consumed.

Cultivation of Sencha green tea

For Sencha tea, the tea plants are covered with a net that blocks out sunlight a few days before harvesting. Due to the lack of sunlight, the leaves become thinner, softer and more amino acids and chlorophyll grow in the leaf, which colors it a deep green.

The Green Tea Sencha Harvest

Japanese Sencha Tea is harvested early in the season from May through June.
Only the best leaves are used.

Production of leaf to Sencha tea

For Japanese Sencha tea, the leaves are steamed (to prevent oxidation and capture the nutrients), then rolled and finally dried.

Is Sencha Tea Healthy?

Sencha tea is packed with nutrients that are good for the human body.

Polyphenols

Polyphenols are natural antioxidants. Sencha green tea contains many polyphenols such as tannin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). These antioxidants help protect your body from the harmful effects of free radicals.

Caffeine

Sencha tea contains a lot of caffeine, more than coffee. Together with the Tannins in the tea, the caffeine provides your body with a long-lasting boost without making you hyper.

Vitamins

In Sencha green tea you will find several vitamins. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E.

All this makes Sencha tea healthy!

How to prepare a Sencha tea?

  1. Pour a teaspoon of Sencha tea into a teacup.
  2. Pour water of about 80 - 90 degrees Celsius over it.
  3. Let the tea steep for a while (about 2 to 5 minutes).
  4. The ideal drinking temperature for Sencha tea is about 60 degrees Celsius.
That may be much lower than what you are used to, but at this temperature the tea comes fully into its own. The warmer you brew the tea, the stronger the taste. But Sencha tea should taste soft, which is why you drink the infused tea on water of a lower starting temperature (no boiling water).

Great green tea. And organic!
I have been using the matcha from Holyflavours for a while now. When I saw that they also had new Japanese teas, I immediately bought this Sencha to try it out. This is a slightly more 'normal' green tea.

It is full of flavor yet smooth. I really like it!
