What you need to know about the different types of salt

With its unique ability to bring out the flavours in food, salt has been added to most recipes as a key seasoning for centuries. Without salt, cooking can be dull and unappetising, and everyone likes a little flavour in their food.

Salt is necessary for our bodies to function correctly. Finding the right balance is therefore necessary.

Some types of salt highlighted

To get a good picture of the different types of salt, we will discuss the main salts here.

Sea salt

Sea salt is as the name implies comes from the sea. Coarse sea salt is suitable for garnishing, while fine sea salt is ideal for cooking food and baking thanks to its ability to dissolve.

The French producer Baleine is known for its good quality Baleine salt. They have a wide range of sea salt and are easy to recognize by their distinctive logo: a large whale.

Unrefined salt

The most common ground salt is extracted from the ground and not from the sea. Table salt is a cheap and common condiment in this regard.

One drawback is that this cheap type of salt is refined and processed in a factory. More unrefined salts are recommended and they contain more iodine. An element that is necessary for a correct thyroid function and good for mental development.

Fleur de sel

Fleur de sel is an easily available sea salt ideal for garnishing. The pure nature of Fleur de sel, free from additives, preservatives, or anti-caking agents, produces a salt with a cleaner taste.

Smoked salts

Smoked salts are exactly what the name says. Smoked salts are a gourmet treat and should be used sparingly on meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables for a truly unique taste.

Potassium salt, where to buy?

You can buy potassium salt at many different webshops nowadays. Potassium salt is a salt type that contains a combination of sodium and potassium chloride. Most available and used potassium salt products contain up to 70% less sodium than standard table salt.

Buy a salt substitute?

At Naturaplaza we offer various salt substitutes and salt substitute herbs. Salt substitutes are often low-sodium alternatives that usually consist of chemical sources. The distinctive taste of chemically obtained salt alternatives is not to everyone's taste. Natural, chemical-free options such as dulse (seaweed) granules are marketed as salt substitutes, which contain the same range of minerals as 'pure' sea salt.

In conclusion: watch your salt intake

Enjoying a diet rich in unprocessed, naturally low-sodium foods is the most nutritious option, allowing you to add salt to taste when cooking. Choosing which type of salt is best is a matter of personal taste.
