Sage grows well on sunny mountain slopes in warm chalky soil. These places can be found mainly around the Mediterranean. Especially the whole region along the Adriatic coast. The main producing countries are Turkey, Russia, Greece and Albania.

What is sage?

Sage leaf comes from the sage plant, which, like lavender, also belongs to the family of lipflower plants. The smell of sage is stronger than many other herbs, so you will quickly smell sage in the kitchen. It tastes a little bitter, but otherwise spicy and warm.

What can you do with cut sage leaf?

The herb has many uses as a kitchen herb. Sage is most commonly used in Mediterranean dishes, it has a piney, aromatic slightly bitter and spicy taste. It is used as a pizza topping, in minestrone soup, in the meat speciality saltimbocca and the taste of the herb goes well with fish and poultry. A well-known Italian dish is pasta con burro e salvia, or pasta with butter and sage. Sage is also used in toothpaste. Drink the occasional soothing sage tea before bedtime or use it to rinse or gargle.
