Where does leek come from?

Leek is a plant of the Narcissus family (Amaryllidaceae), which is eaten as a vegetable. The earliest mention of leeks is in Egypt and Sumer, about 4000 years ago, where they were grown in the gardens of kings and pharaohs.

What can you do with leek?

Leek is mainly eaten cooked, often processed in salads and soups. However, it can also be eaten raw. Leek powder is used as a kitchen herb to flavour meat, chicken, fish, sauces or pasta. Try it as an alternative to fresh leek in soup (if you do not like pieces). You can keep leek powder much longer than a bunch of fresh leeks and it is easy to store.

About the healthy properties of Leek:

Leek is diuretic and particularly good for the throat, used for dry cough and hoarseness. Leek is rich in Vitamin C and Calcium. It also contains potassium, magnesium and manganese.
