Origin of the Pecan nut

The pecan (also called Carya illinoinensis) is a large tree of 40 to 50 metres in height from the walnut family. It is mainly found in the southern United States and grows best in subtropical climates. The tree has alternate leaves and yellowish-green flowers. 

The Pecan nut is the seed of the fruit of the tree and has an elongated-oval to cylindrical shape that is strongly grooved. It has a reddish-brown skin. 

Traditionally, the Pecan nut was the staple food of many Native American tribes during the autumn and winter months, and was also used as a means of exchange. 

Growing Pecans

Pecan trees begin to shed their nuts in autumn, before the leaves fall. Depending on the variety and climate, harvesting of Pecans takes place from late September to November. They are stored both shelled and unpeeled, where they are kept in a cool and dry place.

Pecans have a deliciously sweet, buttery and nutty flavour. You can eat them raw as a healthy snack, possibly in combination with other nuts. In addition, they are often used as a garnish for cakes, pies and dessert dishes, but also to add a bite.
