Sweet Pepper Powder Smoked Organic
What is the difference between smoked paprika and pimentón
Smoked paprika is made from special pointed chillies, the chillies are about 12-15 cm long. The chillies are first dried. Afterwards, the chillies are ground. The taste of the peppers can only develop well when they are in a fairly warm and dry climate. The lighter the colour of the peppers, the better the quality of the powder.
Types of sweet pepper powder
There are different kinds of sweet pepper powders. The mild kind with a sweet taste is produced by removing the seeds before grinding. This is usually the regular 'sweet paprika'. You also have the smoked variety pimentón de la Vera. Pimentón de la Vera is a smoked paprika from Spain that comes in a sweet and a spicy variant. Pimenton de la Vera dulce is the sweet variety and the spicy powder is called pimentón de la Vera picante'. These smoked paprika powders come from the region around La Vera.
Surprisingly tasty powder
This paprika is super tasty. That is because it is smoked. The powder is made of a small, pointed red pepper and therefore not of the well-known round red peppers that you find in every supermarket. These peppers are not only sweet, but also mildly spicy. Before being ground into powder, the peppers are smoked over a fire of holm oak wood. This gives them a fantastic smoky aroma.
Healthy properties of smoked paprika
Smoked paprika contains a lot of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps your eyes adapt better to twilight, so you can see better in the dark. Vitamin A also has a positive influence on your immune system and helps to keep your skin healthy. That is why smoked paprika is healthy.
Spicy because of capsaicin
Capsaicin is a substance which in mammals causes a burning sensation on the tongue. This effect is almost the same as that of the substance peperine, which is found in peppercorns. The burning sensation cannot be quenched with water-based liquids, as capsaicin is not water-soluble. It is, however, soluble in fats. Therefore, drinking milk or drinking yoghurt has an extinguishing effect.
The scoville scale
The pungentness of a pepper is measured with the scoville scale. The more capsaicin the pepper contains, the 'hotter' it tastes. Our smoked paprika powder is only mildly spicy and is therefore not ranked very high on that scale.
Use smoked paprika powder:
Add to taste with Tapas, BBQ marinades, grilled meat or prawns.
