History and Origins of Junipers

The Juniper (Juniperus Communis) is a conifer from the cypress family. It occurs naturally in the Benelux. The name Juniperus is a Celtic word that means prickly. And prickly is the juniper bush. Communis means "common."

The juniper played a role in prehistory. The pollen of the berries has been found in soil layers, around the year 13,500 - 12,100 BC. The berries and seeds have been found in cesspools and this indicates the use of the berries as a spice.

Use

The juniper has a spicy, bittersweet taste with a woody and bittersweet smell. They are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. The berry-shaped cone fruits are used to flavour various drinks. Besides being used in drinks, juniper is also used in marinades and sauerkraut. Juniper berries can also be added to supplements and slimming products. Whole juniper berries can be used in, for example, yoghurts or as a snack.
