Origin of Juniper berries
The juniper berry (also called Juniperus Communis) comes from a conifer. The name Juniperus comes from the Celtic word which means prickly. This prickly shrub grows in the Benelux, among other places. In the Netherlands, it can mainly be found on the Veluwe, in Drenthe and in Twente.
The dark blue berry has been used as a spice for centuries. The berries and seeds have been found in the soil, which corresponds to the year 12,000 BC.
Nutritional value Juniper berry powder
The juniper berry has a spicy and bittersweet taste. This taste normally develops slowly, so the longer they are cooked the better the taste comes out (like in marinades). However, our juniper berries are ground into a powder which means that it takes less time for the flavour to be released and you can use it more easily in more dishes.
Juniper berry powder is full of;
- Minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and sodium.
- Vitamins such as; vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3 and vitamin C.
- Essential oils such as; alphapineen and sabineen.
What can I use juniper powder for?
Juniper powder can be used in many different ways. In general, it tastes good when added to winter dishes. For example, it is traditionally used to season game meat. But don't forget to use Juniper powder when preparing fish and poultry! The flavour comes out wonderfully with meat or fish on the grill or barbecue. The flavour of the juniper berry also goes very well with sauerkraut and other types of cabbage.
Juniper powder is very tasty to add to marinades and sauces, but you can also use it as a basis for ragout or a fruit salad. It goes well with other herbs such as parsley, bay leaf, rosemary, marjoram, garlic, black pepper and thyme.
Moreover, the powder is also used to bring fragrance to, among others, the drinks jin and gin (the name of the gin drink also comes from the berry).
