Powder of juicy blackberries

The blackberry is a fruit that comes from the Rubus plant. Even though it is called a berry, it actually consists of small drupes.

Although blackberries are usually black, they can also come in colours like red, purple or white. Did you know that blackberries not only look attractive, but are also packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants?

Where the blackberry came from

It is not certain where blackberries first grew because there is conflicting evidence. Some believe they grew in ancient Greece, while others claim it was Asia. But wild blackberries have been found in Europe for many centuries.

Blackberries have been around since the Middle Ages. An old English herbal book first mentioned "brambles". Since then, they have been grown and eaten all over the world. Whether you eat them fresh or as a pie, there is no denying that blackberries are delicious!

How do blackberries grow?

Blackberry plants grow differently depending on the bush's rootstock. A plant from seed usually has a spreading growth habit, while those from cuttings are more upright. Almost any garden is suitable for blackberries, especially the thornless varieties.

Both types of plants produce long stems that can grow up to 10 metres long. These stems usually have thorns and leaves of 2-3 centimetres.

The flowers of the blackberry bush are white or pink and produce small black berries. The fruits are usually ready for harvest from late summer to early autumn.

How to process blackberries?

Blackberries are a tasty summer fruit that can be eaten in many ways. Picking them fresh from the bush and eating them immediately is one of the most popular ways to enjoy blackberries.

There are many ways to process blackberries, such as freezing them or making them into jam. But before they can be processed, they need to be picked.

To pick blackberries, first lightly squeeze the fruit until it detaches from the stalk. Once all the berries are picked, rinse them and store them in the freezer.

Late June to early August is the ideal time to pick blackberries. The berries are then not only ripe and juicy, but also most delicious. You can eat them fresh or use them for pies, jam and other desserts.

Which blackberries are best?

If you pick blackberries yourself in verges, woods, beech trees and birch forests, here are some tips.

  • Choose only blackberries that are deep black - if they have any green or red hues, they are not ready.
  • Secondly, take the blackberry and apply a little pressure. If it feels soft and makes an indentation, it is ripe. However, if it feels hard or mushy, it is unfortunately past its prime.
  • Finally, take a moment to smell the blackberry. Ripe blackberries should smell sweet and be fragrant. If they don't smell at all or have a strange odour, it's probably best not to pick them.

How freeze-drying helps preserve the nutrients in blackberries

Freeze-dried food is food from which the water has been removed - this can be achieved by freezing the food, exposing it to a vacuum and then slowly reheating it. Freeze-drying blackberries retains their nutrients and prevents them from spoiling quickly.

Removing water also helps prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi, which can lead to food poisoning. Freeze-dried foods therefore have a longer shelf life than otherwise preserved foods.

Are blackberries healthy?

Blackberries are not only delicious, but are also packed with nutrients that offer a wide range of health benefits. Blackberries contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Blackberries are full of antioxidants

Blackberries have several types of antioxidants, including vitamin C, polyphenols and ellagic acid.

Blackberries packed with vitamins

Vitamin C, aka ascorbic acid, is an antioxidant that clears free radicals. Blackberries are full of it - one cup provides more than 50% of the daily recommended amount.

Blackberries are rich in vitamin K, and one serving already provides more than 30% of the recommended daily allowance.

Frozen blackberry powder
I love adding blackberries to my yogurt; the freeze-dried blackberry powder makes it last longer, which I find really convenient. I prefer the powder over the whole blackberry itself since it's easier to incorporate into various dishes.
